What is MOSS and the carbon credit market? 

MOSS believes that the positive impact to the Amazon rainforest is only the beginning of all the good carbon credits can do around the world. The assets are sold on the platform and go through rigorous processes which follow international standards. The certification of MOSS selected credits follow the  VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) global protocol, which ensures credit ballast, in order to avoid double counts. 

For the transaction, MOSS uses the MCO2 Token, the first global scale carbon credit token, that offers ease, transparency, and security for carbon footprint compensation. By means of MCO2 token purchases, MOSS clients have already sent USD 10 Million in 8 months to conservation projects in the Amazon rainforest. That amount represents a preservation of approximately 1 Million hectares.  

What is Agrocortex Acre Wood?

Agrocortex Acre Wood is a company in the brazilian forestry sector focused on sustainability. It unites environmental conservation through forest management in the Amazon Rainforest with social responsibility by means of quality of life improvements to the people in the region the project is inserted.

Sustainable forest management is a means of interacting with the forrest with the purpose of wood extraction. The goal is to minimize the impacts to the rainforest and assist in woodlands and local biodiversity conservation. Consequently, we can say that sustainable management stimulates forest development. Over 400 species of birds are estimated to inhabit the Agrocortex project area, which represent about 20% of all cataloged species in Brazil.

Founded in 2014, Agrocortex is committed to managing all operational activities related to forest management and the timber industry. Activities are split between the Seringal Novo Macapá Farm, located on the state border of Acre and Amazonas, and their plant in Manoel Urbano/AC, the nearest city to the farm. 

The company funds one of the biggest sustainable forest exploration projects in Brazil geared towards long term wood production, based on practices that respect the environment in a way that would never strain the natural resources and even contribute with forest regeneration. Besides that, it is the only Sustained Forest Management Plan in Brazil authorized to explore the Swietenia macrophylla king species (Mahogany) conforming with specific legislation and the follow up from the CITES Technical Scientific Committee.

What is the goal of the REED Agrocortex Project? 

Sustainable management is the solution to protecting the forests covering 96% of the state of Acre. Therefore, the main goal of the REDD Agrocortex Project is to prevent unplanned deforestation (AUD) of the project area, of 186.369,66 ac. The annual estimated emission reduction is of 483.594 tCO2.  

The project area is located in the Seringal Novo Macapá Farm, which is located in the Manoel Urbano, Pauini, and Boca do Acre municipalities, in Acre and Amazonas states, southeast region of the Amazon Rainforest. The property is located in the so-called “Amazon Deforestation Arch”, under pressure from all sides by livestock farming, legal and illegal wood extraction, and road construction. 

Other than contributing to the long term conservation of the region, the Agrocortex REDD Project also has the role of establishing a barrier against advancing deforestation, providing an important contribution to biodiversity conservation in the southeast of the Amazon and also to climate regulation in Brazil and South America. 

In 2020, the Agrocortex REDD Project was the winner of the Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings 2020 Prize, in the Best Individual Compensation Project. “From 2014 to 2020, the project prevented deforestation of 5.300 hectares of woodlands. Besides that, it resulted in jobs and income to one of the poorest regions in Brazil”, explained Marcos Pretto, Agrocortex CEO. 

The Agrocortex REDD Project relies on VCS certifications, SocialCarbon and FSC®, and 100% of carbon credit sales are reinvested in the project.

What are the future prospects?

For such projects to keep on going, it is vital that people, companies, and governments unite to raise, mainly, awareness on the importance of the forest as well as attract investment and incentive that cover projects like Agrocortex. 

Currently, Brazil only certifies 5 million credits per year, but has the potential to certify 1.5 billion. If credit pricing gets closer to current european amount, there is a potential for it to result in 60 billion dollars in exportations for the brazilian Amazon rainforest.
