What is the Fortaleza Ituxi REDD Farm Project?  

The REDD Fortaleza Ituxi project aims to protect forests located in one of the regions with the highest deforestation rate in the Amazon Rainforest: the municipality of Lábrea. The project also includes the implementation of activities that support and ensure sustainable forest management, benefiting the local community.

The acronym REDD stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, which is an incentive to financially reward projects that are reducing deforestation. With sustainable activities, it is possible to avoid greenhouse gas emissions associated with deforestation and forest degradation.

The REDD Fortaleza Ituxi project 

The Fazenda Ituxi is located in the south of the Amazon Rainforest and has 150 thousand hectares of environmental preservation. Its objective is to maintain sustainable management and avoid deforestation, boost training of the local community, which depends on the forest, with the cultivation of açaí and chestnuts, for example. Therefore, by stimulating this project, it enables keeping the forest and families safe.

The forest management plan started implementation in 2013 and has a proposed duration of 30 years. By 2015, a reduction of 1,181,732 tCO2 of greenhouse gas emissions was estimated. However, the starting of this implementation was very challenging, due to squatters, invaders, and the awareness of local residents.

Ricardo Stoppe Jr. is the owner of Fazenda Ituxi. And he recalls how in the beginning they called him crazy. “When we started, the locals disdained the project and told me to deforest everything and raise cattle. Today, a few years later, recurrently, they come to me asking about the project and how they can invest too ”.

Currently, Ricardo is very confident and happy with the results of the project. “If the financial viability continues with the sale of carbon credits, I really believe that the Amazon Rainforest can be saved.” The owner of the farm points out that the most difficult part was getting people to understand the project and its benefits beyond the financial aspect. Today, Ricardo points out that there is already a demand for other people to invest in new areas, which are also very deforested.

Sustainable forest management is the main objective of the project. The success of Fazenda Ituxi can be explained by the seriousness and supervision with which everything is carried out. Therefore, with the presence of workers in management activities, investments in security and training, invasion pressures within the project area are inhibited. There are also other benefits, such as the preservation of local biodiversity, fauna, and water resources.
